The Kansas City Center for the Ink & Paper Arts
is a community printmakers’ studio in KC’s West
Bottoms. The facility is comfortably tucked into
5000 square feet of renovated cellar space at
the Hobbs Studio Building and is fully equipped
for relief work, stone lithography, and intaglio.
In addition to allowing KC artists the use of
restored vintage printing equipment, KCCIPA
has begun holding demonstrations & workshops
on its proper use and care.
KCCIPA also aims to meet the needs of book
artisans and creative writers. For the artist or poet
who has more to say than an image alone can
convey, the studio has a modest but growing
selection of metal and wood type. Lettering
designers are on hand who can offer informed
feedback on typographic stylings. Book design,
calligraphy, bookbinding, typography, gilding,
seal cutting, paper marbling, and papermaking
all fall within KCCI&PA’s scope will continue to
be the subject of workshops & other programs.
WHY OPEN A COMMUNITY PRINTMAKERS’ STUDIO
IN KANSAS CITY ?
Until KCCIPA opened in 2006, Kansas City
had no other community printmakers’ facility.
Why not? There are no practical alternatives
for the printmaker or printer without a press.
Many US cities have used &supported this kind
of creative resource for several decades.
The business model and concept are older still.
